Learning spelling is much easier if the child can recognize alphabet clusters, especially vowel-consonant clusters that repeat frequently and make similar sounds. Consonant clusters or blends, are the names given to two or three consonants that appear together in a word. Each consonant retains its sound when blended. The term cluster refers to the written form and the term blend refers to the spoken form. The worksheets will emphasize consonant clusters & diagraphs and encourage the decoding and spelling of words with blends The worksheets will also reinforce phonemic awareness and the concept of rhymes. A sight word is any word that is known by a reader automatically. Sight words are pronounced without decoding the word's spelling. A common first sight word is a child's given name. In phonics instruction, sight words refer to common words where one or more phonemes in the word has a unique spelling that cannot be sounded out using common phonics rules. Sight words are pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and verbs that make up 65 percent of all written material. They are words that cannot be learned through the use of pictures.
